Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles for practical purposes such as the design, manufacture, and operation of products and processes, while accounting for constraints invoked by economics, the environment and other factors. As part of the Poultry Engineering & Operations Team this individual will be primarily responsible for managing high value capital projects created by Corporate Environmental to improve or provide new hatchery and wastewater projects. This individual will act as liaison between Poultry Engineering and the Corporate Environmental and Live Production functions to coordinate capital projects and ensure that Corporate initiatives, goals and directives are implemented across the Poultry network.
This position will report directly to the Associate Director, Engineering, with Poultry engineering and other technical positions as indirect reports on a project by project basis. This position will be directly responsible for managing an annual capital budget between $10 to $55 MM.
ESSENTIAL CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
When requested, provide and or coordinate Engineering’s evaluation of buildings or land.
Represent engineering during meetings with Corporate Environmental and Live Production groups and outside Architecture and Engineering firms, that are presenting future visioning plans, new processes, designs, remodel designs and site development proposals
Work with outside Architecture and Engineering firms to ensure that the plans, specifications and bid documents meet Tyson’s legal requirements and safety standards.
Assist in the development and review of budget estimates and CIR’s created.
Review, update and edit bid documents created by outside Architecture and Engineering firms to ensure they contain project specific versions of Tyson’s contracts, standards, specifications and safety documents.
Specific to each project create a detailed scope of work including site limitations and restrictions.
Coordinate with outside Architecture and Engineering firms to ensure that the design documents, equipment and sub-contractors selected meet Tyson’s requirements and standards.
Work with Capital Procurement to select General Contractors to bid on new construction and remodel projects
Working with Capital Purchasing and the Corporate Services select General Contractors to bid on Corporate Services new construction and remodel projects.
Review all RFI’s sent to Purchasing and direct them to the appropriate party for answers. Send all RFI answers back to purchasing for distribution to all bidders.
In collaboration with Purchasing and Corporate Services select successful bidder on projects.
Review and approve all invoices submitted for payment on projects and release any d-blocks.
Review and approve all change order requests submitted on the project; creating the necessary documentation, obtaining signatures, and updating the purchase order.
Assist the Corporate representatives with estimating and writing all project scope change requests.
Coordinate and schedule all General Contractor initiated outages and building closings with Corporate Services, to minimize its impact on team members.
During the construction/ remodel phase of the project make frequent site visits to ensure the design and equipment installation requirements are being met.
Ensure that Tyson Safety’s hot work and lift permit policies are in place, being followed, and records maintained.
At least bi-weekly have an owner meeting with the General Contractor, to discuss progress, delays, upcoming milestones, equipment deliveries, answer questions, and walk the site to review the projects progress. Work with the General Contractor to find solutions to problems & issues as they arise.
As needed attend the General Contractors sub-contractors progress and safety meetings.
Once a month or more, the owners meeting with the General Contractor will also include the Architect Firms Project Manager. This is typically done by video conference call in the General Contractor’s construction trailer, but several times during the project they will be on site. During the site visits the Architects Project Manager will answer questions, check on progress, and inspect the work completed to ensure that it meets the specifications and design intent.
Review and log all General Contractor RFI’s submitted to the Architect Firm, and their response.
Review and log all General Contractor equipment and materials submittals sent to the Architect Firm, and their response.
Work with the Architecture team in inspecting completed work and developing punch lists. Inspect and sign off on corrected work.
Work with MS Engineering Support to list the assets and their value, that were created on a project. source and identify new external engineering, construction management and construction resources.
Cross functional collaboration across multiple functional areas including Mfg. Operations, Food Safety & Quality Assurance, Safety, Environmental, Finance, Procurement and Continuous Improvement.
Other duties as assigned on poultry engineering projects
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education: BS in Engineering, (preferably Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical) or another related field; or equivalent experience.
Experience: Minimum 6 years of applicable industry experience with a minimum of 3 years in the food industry.
Computer Skills: Personal computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, Visio and Power Point. Familiarity with AutoCad.
Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills to multiple internal department leaders, plant leadership, and occasional executive leadership.
Special Skills: Capable of working on multi-faceted projects of any magnitude while requiring limited supervision. Has demonstrated repeated ability to complete complex projects on time and on budget. Shall have familiarity with a variety of project management and engineering discipline concepts, practices, and procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position will directly supervisor 1-2 team members.
Travel: 30-50%, multi-day stays required; overnight stays required; ability to egress uneven surfaces in construction and plant environments safely and easily.
