The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and The Leadership Conference Education Fund seeks a Fair Courts Manager to help oversee our national effort to protect and defend civil and human rights by advocating for fair courts. The Fair Courts Manager will help execute the national campaign’s strategic plan by advocating for an independent federal judiciary. The campaign works closely with our coalition and partners to advocate for nominees committed to civil and human rights and thorough examination and understanding of individual judicial nominees’ records. The campaign also employs strategic communications and grassroots mobilization to educate the public on the rights at risk and importance of fair courts. The ideal candidate will combine project management experience with strategic thinking, communications, and advocacy.

Management Responsibilities: This position does not manage any direct reports.

Reports to: The Manager reports to the Fair Courts Campaign Director and is based in Washington, D.C.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with staff from various departments, including communications and field, to create and disseminate materials on civil rights issues as it relates to the courts, including fact sheets for the coalition and Hill staff, backgrounders, advocacy materials and resources for coalition partners, and letters to Congress.
  • Monitor movement of relevant federal legislation and judicial nominations.
  • Assists in the development, coordination, and maintenance of effective technical support for coalition members and partners, state partners, and others, including providing information on the judicial nominations process, status of nominations, overall messaging, and specific coalition activities.
  • Coordinate with coalition partners and allies to inform and disseminate key strategic messages as well as identify gaps in existing messaging and resources.
  • Coordinate briefings in D.C. and across the country to discuss the importance of the courts.
  • Actively develop strong relationships with the Fair Courts Team, Fair Courts Task Force members and partners, other coalition partners, and congressional staff to expand the coalition’s reach of influence.
  • Serve as the staff representative for the Government Affairs Department at relevant Leadership Conference task force meetings, legislative hearings, coalition meetings, conference calls, meetings with agency and legislative staff, and other events, networks, conferences, and meetings.
  • Support the daily management of the fair courts campaign, including helping oversee the campaign’s infrastructure, including assisting the Director to ensure budget and operational needs are met and compliance with all fund requirements and other administrative, fiscal, and legal responsibilities, as well as lead efforts to measure and explain our impact.
  • Draft and seek input on agendas for critical meetings and briefings with staff, coalition partners.
  • Fluently communicate the campaign’s goals, and identify opportunities for projects that help the team meet these goals.
  • Other duties, as needed.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to civil and human rights for all persons in the United States.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including technical writing experience that addresses barriers confronting people of color, people with disabilities, English learners, LGBTQ people, immigrants, women and girls, religious minorities, and working families. Experience developing communications about connecting civil rights with the judiciary a plus.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse audiences, including high-level policy makers, coalition members, and colleagues.
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to carry through projects from conception to completion.
  • A team player with experience and ability to problem solve, work with urgent deadlines, exercise discretion, and prioritize and manage multiple complex projects.
  • Demonstrates curiosity and initiative, as well as attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Familiarity with the federal legislative process, with knowledge of the judicial nominations process a plus.
  • Experience managing briefings and high-level meetings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience related to policy, advocacy, coalition building, and project management.
  • Experience with Hill or administration experience a plus.

Salary and Benefits:

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and excellent benefits. Currently, this is a two-year term position
