We all know that the more you know the more valuable you are. That is true in your personal life and in your professional life also. There is no doubt about the statement that knowing more helps you. The discussion here is how much is having a special certificate going to help in the advancement of your career as a manager? Especially in this new economic time we are experiencing in the United States these days.

The US Post Office is talking today about closing down 3,200 locations. That is a full ten percent of the locations on line as of this writing. You may wonder why I am bringing up the Post Office in this article. Here is the correlation for you.

The Post Office is a lot like a company like Best Buy. They train the people who work there very well and they expect those people to continue to increase the job skill set that they have through continued learning. Even so there are a lot of people who stand to lose the jobs that they have when the budget cuts happen. So how valuable can those certificates be? It's not going to save their jobs.

The bottom line there is that they could not control what happened. No more than you can control the weather. However, while having those skills and the certificates saying that they have them may not save their jobs they may well get them a transfer as opposed to a pink slip. If they have the knowledge and the seniority they may well stay employed.

The same will hold true in the area of management. Your having and holding the certificate that you earned may not help you immediately if the company is down sizing. But having that certificate may just keep you in another area of the company by getting you a transfer. And if not, having the knowledge certainly will make you much more desirable to another company and won't harm your chances when you are looking to move to another job. A certificate or a degree can always help you in getting a better job especially in this hard time when companies are cutting down staff. There is also a possibility that you are preferred to stay on the job just because you are certified for it and the other person isn't

What you need to know is that while having that certificate may not get you the job, it will almost certainly open the door to the interview, which will in turn allow you to sell your self to the prospective new boss. Having the knowledge and the certificate that your current job asked you to go for may not do anything to you at this time in the position you have now. But look to the future; since you have no idea what that future holds it is better to know more and about more things. The more diverse your package the more indispensable you become to your current job and the more irresistible you are to a prospective new one.

So the answer is that having the certificate will indeed help you as a manager. It will make you a more rounded individual and can only increase your worth and earning ability down the line as we weather the upcoming business storms.
